February 1st to February 10th

Students are knee deep in the 19th century.

On Wednesday, we finished up Les Miserables by watching excerpts from the Musical.

On Thursday, we'll be using our Ideology guide to take a small quiz.

On Friday, February 3rd, we will watch a slide show on Chapter 22.

Monday--hopefully we'll be in the library to work on the Viva la Vida chart.

On Tuesday, we'll do the Industrial Revolution DBQ

On Wednesday, February 8th, we should be studying the Crimean War.

On Thursday, Feb. 9th, we'll be continuing with the Crimean War and work on the map.

On Friday, we will be discussing Positivism, Realism, and the publication of the Communist Manifesto.

Week of December 5th-9th

We are rapidly approaching the French Revolution in European History. This event was the earthquake that changed Europe forever. After 1789--the great monarchies all had to make compromises with their people to maintain power.

Students are working in class on Chapter 20 questions, and they had two back to back quizzes on Social History and the Enlightened Despots.

Students will also have an extra credit film list and massive take home exam over Christmas Break.

Tuesday, October 18th: Finish Quiz on English Civil War, discuss DBQ
Wednesday, October 19th: More DBQ Work, The Dutch Republic slide show, Girl with the Pearl Earring.
Thursday, October 20th: We will write the witchcraft DBQ on Thursday or Friday.

Week of October 24-28th

We will be discussing the scientific revolution, watching the film, Newton's Dark Secrets. By the end of the week, we should be at the Age of Absolutism and Louis XIV.

Wow--we are really busy in AP Euro.

This week, students are getting a look at the reformation in "full swing," as they view the film, Elizabeth. This film was made on location in many historic sites in England, and it focuses on the reformation and its affect on the early years of Elizabeth I's reign. Students please note the references to the Prince, which Walsingham makes.

On next Monday, we will be taking the Reformation test.
Also next week, we will stop and spend some time discussing the DBQ, a primary document activity which is one of the main components of the AP Euro course.

Week of September 12-23rd

Last year's AP results were the highest ever, with 90% of students passing. Congrats to students of 2010-2011.

Right now we are busy finishing up with background information on the Middle Ages.

On Wednesday, September 14th, we will be spending a review day on the Middle Ages. On Thursday we start the Renaissance, and on Friday we are in the library for our Renaissance Scavenger hunt.

Monday, September 19th will be our Middle Ages Test, based on the notes and test guide.

We'll finish up the Renaissance on Tuesday with a take home test. Students will also be writing an essay on The Prince. That will be due on September 26th.

May 9th through 20th

Wow--the AP exam is over, so back to work! I hope you all did well---the exam results will be made available in July.
In the meanwhile, I would encourage students who did not take the exam to consider going to Chemeketa and taking the CLEP exam sometime in may. You need to take Western Civilization II.
On Tuesday, students begin their primary document based final exam. This is a fabulous chance for you to learn as you take a test as the exam covers all periods of the AP course. These is also a visual and written element to the final, so by the time we are done (Thursday), students will be ready to unwide with a film. In this case, we always show Dr. Zhivago. The second film, if we have time, will probably be the Mission. Both are fabulous and I have super viewing guides and historical slideshows to support.

The final week of AP Euro will be spend doing our presentations. This is my favorite part, and students have been given a list of fabulous cultural literacy topics. Ask to see the list and maybe you can help your student decide.

April 11th through the 28th

Wow--we are finishing up the course as we speak. On Tuesday, we will cover the break up of the Soviet Union, the war in Yugoslavia, and the Maastricht Treaty and the coming of the Euro.

We will then be reviewing in class for the next two weeks. Though some have elected not to take the exam, they should consider going to Chemeketa and signing up for the CLEP exam at any time and taking Western Civilization II.

For the rest who are taking the AP exam, you will need to plan to make the review sessions at least once a week. When are they?

Monday--after school

Wednesday--before school

Each is about 45 minutes long.

April 1st through April 8th

Wow--we are finishing up AP Euro fast and furious.

On Monday, we will do World War II in a day. Chapter 26 and 27 questions are due then.

On Monday, I will hand out chapter 28 questions.

We will also finish up World War I and watch the short documentary, The Plot to Kill Hilter.

On Wednesday, we will discuss post World War II reconstruction, the Cold War, and steps toward greater European Unity.

March 16th through Spring Break

AP Exam sign up needs to be done by March 30th ($87).

We will need to cover the dictatorships over Spring Break (sorry guys! Those furlough days are responsible for this).

You will be given chapter 26 and 27 to complete and turn in on the 29th.

If Mrs. Olsen is not back from Europe on the 29th (that is, if a volcano erupts in Iceland, or, she is asked to stay for Prince William's wedding) you will be viewing the slideshow about the three dictators, Mussolini, Hitler and Stalin.

On Friday, March 18th, Mrs. Platz, the substitute, will be administering your 100 point test on the 19th century. Good luck guys and good studying! You already have the yellow sheet, and on Wednesday, March 16th, after the slide show, you will have the period to study.

For Spring Break, you will also be given an official AP Euro practice exam. IT is an OPEN BOOK test, which means you can use the MOTHERSHIP and text to get the most correct answer.

March 2nd through March 18th

We are rushing to get to Chapter 26 by Spring Break.

On Thursday, March 4, we will discuss Imperialism across chapters 23-25. Students will learn about the Berlin Conference of 1884, when the "Scramble for Africa" began. They will watch the brief documentary Zulus at War. If we have time we will discuss the poem "White Man's Burden."

On Monday, March 7th we will finish discussing Imperialism. I will hand out a test. On Wednesday, March 10th both the Imperialism Test and the Questions on White Man's Burden will be due.

On Wednesday, we will begin learning about the causes of World War I. Students are to do the questions on Chapter 25 and 26. They will be due on Monday, March 14th. On Monday, March14th , I will be lecturing all day on World War I. On Wednesday, we will cover the period of the 1920's and on Friday, students will be given a work day to do questions on Chapter 27. The Age of Catastrophes.

Students will have homework over the break--I will be giving them an AP exam which they are to do (open book--or with assistance from the Mothership).

Week of February 22-25th

On Wednesday, Students in AP Euro will be hearing a lecture on the unification of Germany.

They will also take a quiz on Communism and Karl Marx.

We will also be discussing Edgar Montero's kidnapping and the affect it had on Italian Unification.

On Friday, we will continue with an open book (probably take home) test on unification. We will also be learning about the impact of European culture on the globe. We may be starting a discussion of Imperialism.

On Tuesday, March 1st, we will discuss Imperialism. Students will view the film on the Battle of Tushima. We will continue to discuss Imperialism. Students will also do a short DBQ on Imperialism in the Belgian Congo under King Leopold.

Weeks of February 7th through February 18th

We have been busy reviewing how to write a Document Based Question paper.

On Tuesday, February 8th, students will be writing a DBQ of their choice from the four that were sent home.

On Thursday, they will need to turn in Questions on Chapter 23. We will also write a second DBQ. They will make a choice what DBQ they want me to grade--however--I will also be giving a second "first glance"grade on their second choice.

On Monday,February 14, we will continue with the course. I would like the Viva la Vida questions with parents signature on this day. Monday will be a lecture ont eh Crimean War. Students will read the Charge of the Light Brigade.

On Wednesday, February 16th, we will devote the class to the rise of Napoleon III and Third Empire France.

On Friday, February 18th, we will unify Germany and Italy. Students will be taking home maps to complete over the weekend.

Week of January 18 through 28th

We are really busy in AP Euro.

Students learned about the Industrial Revolution yesterday and read an interview done in 1815 on the effects of Mill work on children. Chapter 18-22 is due on Thursday.

The chart on the different ideologies will be due on Monday, January 24rth.

All students have been given a hard copy of the test review. I made this LOOKING at the TEST, so kids, there should be very few surprises.

As soon as we return in February, we are going to Pause and take a week to work on Document Based Questions.

Please keep on top of your grade on INTOUCH as I put in these last few assignments.

Wow--we are really rushed in AP Euro right now.

On Wednesday, the 3 sheets on Chapter 20 (French Revolution) are due.

On Friday January 7th this is due:

Open book test on the French Revolution
Founding documents of the English, American and French Revolution comparison chart.

On Monday, Questions on Chapter 21 (Napoleon) are due.
We will be doing a special slide show and read a play about Napoleon on Friday January 7th and Monday, January 10th.

On Wednesday, January 12th and Friday January 14th we will be studying Social History and the effects of the Industrial Revolution.

The movie LES MISERABLES is being offered as extra credit. I only want students to view the movie with Liam Neeson as Jean Valjean. They will need to write one page personal response in order to receive credit.

Week of December 13-17th

We will continue to learn about the French Revolution.

Students will need to have the French Revolution Questions (3 part packet) done by Friday.

I handed out the extra credit film list, so students can view any of those films over the Christmas break.

Students will have homework. They will do Chapters 18-22 on the Industrial Revolution and Chapter 21, on Napoleon. We will study Napoleon the first week when we get back.

December 5th-9th

We are swamped trying to push through the Enlightenment.

On Monday, we learned about the Enlightened Despots. Students were given a 30 point quiz to complete and turn in Wednesday.

On Wednesday, students will be handed the questions on the French Revolution.

On Friday, we will start the French Revolution.

I will be handing out, next week, the list of extra credit films over the break. There will need to also be some homework over the break because we are busy.

Enlightenment

Students will be turning in their Enlightenment test and chart first thing on Tuesday. This must be done as it was assigned to be finished over the break.

On Tuesday, students will finish learning about the Seven Years War. They will also learn about the Enlightenment's main writers.

On Thursday, students will learn about the Enlightened Monarchs: Catherine the Great, Frederick the Great, and Emperor Joseph of Austria.

Week of November 15th-19th

Wow...we are almost done the Age of Absolutism.

Students should by now have finished the back page on the Rise of Russia.

We will have a brief discussion of the different reforms under Peter the Great, and also have a comparison of Peter the Great and Louis XIV.

We will spend some time on Monday learning about the Battle of Spanish Succession.
On Wednesday, we will begin to learn about the early enlightenment (chapter 18) and on Friday, we will be into the Enlightenment.

Take home assignment alert---we will mainly be studying the Enlightenment, Chapter 19, during Thanksgiving break. This of course means that there will be homework over the holidays...stay tuned.

Week of November 7th-12th

We are knee deep in learning about the Age of Absolutism and the Rise of Parliament..

Students will continue to work on their POA's for Chapter 18.

In class this week we will be reading the play "In a Time of Tulips and Turmoil." Students will have questions to answer, and an evalutation of Saint-Simon's description of the court during the reign of Louis XIV. Students will also take home and open book test due the next week.

Students will also need to view on line the slide show for Sweden and Russia after the Thirty Years War, and fill in the notes.

Because we are going to have a full week off at Thanksgiving two weeks from now, I will be handing out a packet. Students are going to have homework over this week--so be prepared. It, too, will be due when we get back the following week.

We are going to be having a very busy week learning about the English Civil War, the Restoration, and Royal Absolutism.

On Tuesday I handed out the revised Versailles sheet that students are to do while looking at the official Versailles website.

On Thursday, they will taking home the play, A time of Tulips and Turmoil (yes, written by Mrs. Olsen) and answering the questions on the front. On the back of the sheet they will respond to a primary document about Louis XIV and the Court of Versailles.

October 25th-29th

On Monday, students will take a major exam on chapters 15-16--the questions on the test are on the previous post. Everyone heaved a sigh of relief when I put the test off for a day...I wonder why! They will also view a slide show about Copernicus and Galilleo. On Wednesday, students will be working all day out of the Green Palmer Colton Text. On Friday, the film Newton's Dark Secrets will also be shown.

I will be handing out many assignments on Louis XIV, the English Civil War, and the Restoration. Should be a busy week--but very interesting. The next major exam will be two weeks from Monday.
